Virtual Peer Mentoring

 

This week, CityU’s Center of Information Assurance Education (CIAE) proudly presents Clark Ngo and Kim Nguyen Virtual Study Project: Pass the Linux+ Certification.

Clark earned a Bachelor of Science in Management of Financial Institutions, while Kim earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. They chose to attend CityU Seattle’s Master of Science degree in Computer Science to advance their careers, as they transitioned to the technology field.
Last year, Professor Sam Chung developed the AWS Apprenticeship program to educate and train veterans transitioning to the technology industry. Clark and Kim were two of six Teaching Assistants (TA) hired to mentor 23 veterans through 17 weeks of System Development courses. As a bonus, the TAs received scholarships to take the CompTia Linux+ Certification.
With #SocialDistancing and #SelfQuarantine, Clark and Kim can no longer study in person. They conduct weekly study sessions online via #Zoom utilizing technologies such as #Trello and #VirtualMachine, for flash cards and Linux playground, respectively. Clark’s learning approach is through studying the textbook first and then doing hands-on-practice using a #VirtualMachine. He also studies using the practice test to reinforce the lessons learned. On the other hand, Kim starts with watching the lecture videos and taking the practice test, before practicing in a Linux environment. They team up virtually twice a week to keep one another motivated, with the goal to take the Linux+ exam at the end of April.
Clark Ngo graduated at the end of March 2020. Based upon his TA performance and leadership, he will work as adjunct faculty with CityU, while looking for a job as a Full Stack Developer elsewhere.
