Edge, Cloud, & Sky Computing Research Group
Time: Fridays 1700-1800
Meeting Subjects
- Cloud computing provides the ability for users to get on-demand access to computational resources on a pay-as-you-go basis from the provider. This is as opposed to the traditional on-premises solutions that required businesses to own the computational resources even if they would remain idle.
- Cloud computing has its pros and cons depending on the application:
- Sky computing (or utility computing) have been proposed to address the costumer lock-in issue in cloud computing. It is usually cumbersome to switch from one main cloud provider to another which locks the user with the initial cloud provider or requires an extreme amount of work to adjust the application to a new cloud environment and provide flexibility for the end-user.
- Edge computing has been proposed to overcome the centralized processing limitation of cloud computing. Cloud computing requires all computation to be done on the cloud. This requires data to be transferred to the cloud and may become a bottleneck in time-sensitive applications.
In our research group, we will investigate best practices related to the most relevant architectures for Bioinformatics and compare metrics such as performance, cost and security of the different computing types.
Students that have been working on Team Projects and are interested in pursuing their research are also welcomed to join the club.
See you all in the meeting!
