Message from Leadership

Insight into the current job market.

Last week, an acquaintance’s son, a recent grad from a four-year tech program, asked for help finding a job. After evaluating the graduate’s situation, I felt compelled to write this Message from Leadership for STC CityU students. I urge you to take proactive steps in securing that first tech job or achieving that desired promotion.

Think Like a Hiring Manager

To think like a hiring manager, it’s crucial to understand their priorities. They are searching for candidates who bring innovation, critical thinking, solid communication skills, a team mentality, passion for continuous learning, and the capacity to apply and showcase what they’ve learned.

Prove It

Proving you possess these qualities takes more than just attending class and earning a degree. Some examples include: getting involved in school clubs, participating in competitions, volunteering, attending conferences and industry meetups, and seeking out internships!

If you are employed, let your manager know about your studies at CityU. Join a research group at CityU and participate in the Applied Research Symposium at graduation.

Establish a professional network by attending STC’s Invited Talks.

Finally, utilize your LinkedIn profile and build your professional presence. Follow people that have the role you desire, comment on and share posts, and search for groups that align with your professional interests.
