This Week in Tech History

First Spreadsheet VisiCalc is Released on October 19, 1979

wikipedia.org

The very first commercially available spreadsheet was not Excel, but VisiCalc (for Visual Calculator). Soon after its release on October 19th 1979, it became hailed as the most important software in the personal computer market. It was originally released for the Apple II by VisiCorp. VisiCalc is given the credit for turning personal computers from a hobby tool to serious business tool. Dan Bricklin conceived the idea when he was working on his MBA at Harvard Business School while writing a financial model on the Blackboard. He graduated from MIT with an electrical engineering and computer engineering degrees where he met Bob Frankston a software engineer and mathematics major, and together they formed Software Arts and developed VisiCal. Software Arts later changed its name to VisiCorp.
