Brian Maeng, Ph.D, School of Technology & Computing
Since coming to CityU, I have seen the importance of preparing our students to land a tech job. STC provides online Invited Talks by industry leaders to share information, insights, and profiles of their companies with our students. Because of Rich MacGilvray’s recommendation, we now asking our industry professionals to invite an HR team member to talk about internships or how to apply for a position at their company.
I repeatedly hear from my industry colleagues and our advisory boards that students, in addition to their university degree, will need to demonstrate professional and technical skills in a verifiable way. Extra-curricular activities like clubs, research groups, and competitions are different ways to demonstrate your competencies.
The STC Thursday Byte lists club activities, and course shells include extra-curricular activities. Every club has a different culture, and they all welcome student presentations to showcase passion and skills, as well as to demonstrate personal projects. Clubs provide a platform to present technical topics in a welcoming environment. An opportunity for positive feedback and thought-provoking questions are added benefits. I encourage every STC student to be a part of this process and start practicing presentation skills in preparation for your new job in tech. Please join multiple STC clubs and Research Groups. Continue to read the rest of the Thursday Byte for links to club activities.

Last week the CityU Enactus team traveled to New York to compete in the National Finals for the Early Stage Competition. This is the first year that the Enactus United States has been awarded a champion for the Early Stage level. CityU Enactus brought 11 students and their faculty advisor, Dr. Kathy Cox, for the competition. The team presented a compelling, passionate story on their Clean Up project that helps 12 people experiencing homelessness to start a graffiti abatement business.
