Message From Leadership

Morgan Zantua, Center for Cybersecurity Innovation Program Director

Ten years ago, I remember sitting at my desk at work and opening an invitation to a conference for a new NSF funded conference project, Women in Cyber Security (WiCyS). While I was unable to attend the inaugural event, I participated in conference calls, and eventually attended two conferences, first in Atlanta, 2015 and then Dallas, 2016. The vision of Dr. Ambareen Sirja, WiCyS (pronounced WEE-SIS) grew from a grant-funded conference to a vibrant organization.

I’ve had the opportunity to meet Ambareen at multiple conferences and understand her passion to bring equity and opportunity for women into the technology fields.  In 2013 women comprised 10% of the Cybersecurity Workforce. By 2025 projections indicate women will comprise 25% of the global cybersecurity workforce.[1]

WICyS is an organization leading the charge to tip the balance of women entering cybersecurity and technology. The WiCyS Mission Statement is:

At WiCyS, a global community of women, allies, and advocates, we are dedicated to bringing talented women together to celebrate and foster their passion and drive for cybersecurity. We unite local communities of aspiring and thriving women cybersecurity professionals across the world to collaborate, share their knowledge, network, and mentor. We create opportunities through professional development programs, conferences, career fairs, and more.

At the end of the Fall Quarter my student workers, Gabby Wargin and Winter Wells wanted to form a WiCyS student chapter. This Monday, we are holding the first meeting to elect officers and establish the chapter with WiCyS and the City University of Seattle. While you don’t have to be a woman to join WiCyS, you do need to be a woman to hold office.

Review the WiCyS presentation and come prepared to participate in the first chapter meeting Monday, 4:00 P.M. PT on MS TEAMS.

If you are unable to attend the meeting and interested in participating in the CityU WiCyS Chapter, contact C4CyI@cityu.edu Subject Line: WiCyS.
